Eating Vegetarian At: Applebee's

Addendum: This information came from what I can find via pictures, descriptions, and allergen information. Applebee’s does not have an ingredients list for me to make sure that anything here is truely vegan or non-vegan. For instance, the French Onion Soup MIGHT be made using beef broth, but as of right now I am unsure. So take that with a grain of salt.

Now this is the first sit-down restaurant that I am going to review in terms of vegetarianism, most of my other articles have been about fast food restaurants, but I think it is time to review a fuller restaurant every once in awhile.

Now, just to put it out there, Applebee’s has absolutely NO vegetarian main courses. While you can ask them to take off the chicken/shrimp/etc, there is no vegetarian options unless you eat from the kids menu. If you don’t eat much and would like to order the Kids meal, you can choose (Items in Italics are healthier food choices) :

  • Cheesy Bread Pizza
  • Grilled Cheese
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Cheese Quesadilla

with your choice of a side:

  • Fries
  • Garlic Mashed Potatoes
  • Mozzarella Sticks
  • Steamed Broccoli
  • Baby Carrots with Ranch
  • Apple Dippers
  • Vanilla Yogurt

Now if you want to order from the adult menu, there are choices for you as well, but they are going to be sides. Now for the adult sides, vegetarian options include:

  • Spinach and Artichoke Dip with Tortilla Chips
  • Mozzarella Sticks
  • Onion Rings
  • Tomato and Basil Soup
  • French Onion Soup

Now yes, that is really not a lot. In terms of Vegan items, I would say that the Onion Rings, Tomato and Basil soup, fries, and steamed broccoli are Vegan, but not many options at all. Make sure to ask.

For the Pescaterians out there, they do have fish options for you as well! You fish lovers can eat:

  • Shrimp Scampi
  • Double Crunch Shrimp
  • Fish and Chips
  • Savory Cedar Salmon

So there are a few decent options there as well. Remember though, as I said in my disclaimer; these foods may be vegetarian, but they are in no way healthy food choices to make. I tried to point out the more healthier options, but they are still more unhealthy food choices opposed to just cooking food at home.

In terms of AppleBees, they could have a better vegetarian options. Their options they they do have in terms of sides and kids meals are pretty ok, however. There might also been menu options that I missed, or foods specific to certain restaurants, so always check.

  1. A few of the options listed are not actually vegetarian. Their mashed potatoes are made with chicken broth, the french onion soup is made with beef broth, and spinach artichoke dips at restaurants are often made with chicken broth, too. I also believe their french fries, onion rings, and mozzarella sticks are fried in a common fryer so it is possible they are sharing oil with meats/animal products.

    • same fryer cooking does not matter to most of us vegans, but may I ask you to source the information about the broth? The company does not have an ingredients list and all this information comes from the restaurants menu as well as the restaurant allergen information sheet.

would there be any way for you to provide a source, if for nothing else then for the other vegans to see when they read this post?
