Is Ellen Selling Leather Shoes?

The internet has gone awry with the news that Ellen DeGeneres, a well known Vegan talk show host, is selling leather shoes in her new fashion line.

The main issue I see with the news reports, as it seems to not really tell the layman the whole of the evidence. If you just look at the website, or the other place she sells her ED by Ellen designs, you will not find the word “Leather” anywhere on the site. But you see the words “Nubuck” and “Suede”, which are both leather types that she incorporates in about 4 or more pairs of shoes that she is selling.

Often ignored is the fact that she sells Alpaca, Cashmere, Wool, and Merino clothing right beside her animal clothing, such as clothing printed with animals, as well as this picture right here:

Many Vegans are upset that Ellen is selling animal products in her clothing line. So much so that the Global Conservation Group, an animal advocacy group, decided to make an Open Letter, as well as a petition with over 46,000 signatures, designated to get her to drop the leather from her clothing line. They tend to ignore the wool, cashmere, and Alpaca wools that she is using. But they do mention that animals used for leather are treated really horribly, some are even skinned alive while full conscious.

I am someone who cares about animal welfare and does not wear or purchase anything with leather or fur in it. So despite the fact that I am not a vegan (Lacto-vegetarian), I find it odd that someone who claims to be pro-animal and is herself a Vegan would put such items into her clothing line. Ellen was even named Woman of the Year in 2009 by extremist animal rights organization PETA. Ellen even once said:

“I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things with feelings, I just couldn’t disconnect myself from it any longer.”

Ellen and her wife even had a Vegan wedding. So the anger that she faces from Vegans is rational. The biggest anger should be directed at the fact that Ellen is selling hand-knit sweaters at 1,500 dollars each. But I do understand where the anger is coming from.

Ellen herself has yet to comment on the accusations.
